You will spend significant time and effort on all the details of your wedding, so it’s important to choose a photographer who can capture everything according to your vision. Since you and your photographer will spend a lot of time together on the wedding day, it’s crucial to find someone whose style aligns with your preferences and whose personality complements yours. An experienced photographer can offer a wealth of knowledge and creativity, thanks to years dedicated to their craft. A skilled artist should consistently produce work that matches the quality you admire on their website and social media. Here are some tips to help you prepare for your photography consultation.

Have a pen and paper handy so you can look back over all the information you discuss. If you are meeting with more than one photographer this is incredibly important to be able to compare your likes and dislikes.

Expect to pay a retainer
If you absolutely love the photographer you need to be ready to make put down a retainer to reserve your special wedding day and them. Some photographers will even offer an incentive for booking with them at your consultation so keep this in mind when going into your meeting.

Go to the photographer and meet in person.
Meeting the photographer in their studio is ideal, as it allows you to review their previous prints, albums, and canvases. However, not all photographers have studios, and some may be located too far away. Instead, consider meeting your photographer at a location they suggest, often a quiet place where you can have a focused conversation with fewer distractions. As you prepare for this meeting, ask yourself a few important questions: Do you and your fiancé appreciate the photographer’s talent? Do your personalities and vibes align for your special day? Remember, you are assembling a dream vendor team for your wedding. If you choose a photographer with impressive credentials, they can seamlessly fit in with the other talented professionals on your wedding day.

Will you be our photographer on our wedding day?
Probably the most important question you’ll ask relates to the assurances outlined in your contract with the creative professional you admire for their artistic work. In my three decades in this industry, I’ve encountered many stories of brands, companies, and individuals who did not fulfill their promises. We believe in complete transparency regarding our brand, so we include this commitment in our wedding photography contract. This way, both you—the client—and we can be assured that our agreement is clear and that we share the same values.

What will you wear on our wedding day?
Another important factor that keeps this question from being a front-runner is what your photographer wears. While personal style is important, there is a significant difference between fitting into your dream wedding team and dressing appropriately. Black attire is the standard; when I say this, I mean that the shirt, pants, and shoes should all meet this criterion and adhere to a decent dress code. I always find it interesting at weddings that I attend how I bring two outfits and often receive compliments on my shoes and shirts.

Do you have an assistant and /or second shooter (associate.
A second shooter is an additional photographer who can capture important moments on your wedding day. It’s crucial to understand the role of a second shooter and their responsibilities. Unfortunately, some associate photographers may only carry equipment and lack the necessary experience to deliver quality work. A significant concern, especially in Charleston, is that many second shooters are hired at the last minute, just weeks or even days before your wedding. This often leads to subpar results since they may not be familiar with the main photographer’s style or preferences. Our approach is different. We do not operate this way because we understand the potential issues that can arise from hiring last-minute help. We have a dedicated team in place, which allows us to ensure trust and value throughout the process. We genuinely care about your wedding and aim to preserve it perfectly.

When will I expect to receive my wedding gallery after our wedding day?
A key factor to consider is that your photographer should be able to provide you with your gallery within a maximum of four weeks. Today, wedding photographers have the option to outsource their editing (though we do not do this) or use AI software to handle that task (which we also do not do). If you prefer a personal touch, it’s important to have your photographer edit every image they capture, including those taken by their second shooter. This approach ensures a uniform and cohesive look throughout your entire wedding gallery. It’s wise to ask about this process because, after your significant investment, you want to receive a gallery that matches the portfolio you admired and fell in love with.
